2019 Trends Wedding Experts Love

As 2019 dawned, many wedding experts started to write about trends for the new year. Trends typically follow categories such as wedding attire, reception décor and food and flowers. While trends tend to be cyclical, this year’s advice is influenced by both couples’ changing tastes and the example set by last May’s wedding between Meghan Markle and Prince Harry.

Below is an overview of some trends wedding experts excitedly noted for 2019.

Wedding Attire Trends

Brides

Interest in the royal wedding shows up the type of wedding dresses that are trending for 2019. Jacqueline Tynes, writing for Wedding Wire, forecasts a movement toward more minimalist, modern and form fitting wedding gown designs. In a similar vein, writer Lucy Yang forecast 2019 dress styles with sleek and modern asymmetrical design elements. She also pointed to fashion-forward two-piece gowns. Grooms

The only 2019 trend that is universally agreed upon is that grooms are changing things up! Rather than sticking with the standard tuxedo, grooms are wearing suits of many colors. They are also mixing textures, by pairing different fabrics and patterns in pants, vests and jackets. The mix-and-match look at left is from Romón Sanjurjo‘s 2019 collection.

Members of the Wedding Party

Many wedding trend observers have also noticed that couples are being more flexible with their wedding parties. Some are including more children; others are including a “bridesman” or “groomswoman” in their wedding party; and more are allowing bridesmaids to have a variety of dress styles.

Another trend is velvet. Velvet is in vogue for bridesmaids’ dresses, flower girl dresses and even bridesman or groomsmen suits. Ryan Ray took the photo of these velvet-clad flower girls.

Reception Décor and Food

“Now more than ever, couples want to do their wedding their way,” notes event planner Jove Meyer in a 2019 Trend Report. There’s a strong movement toward personalizing as many aspects of the wedding reception as possible. That could mean a very specific décor, guest favors and gifts as well as the type of food chosen—from edible displays, to snack or chef stations, to dressed up comfort food (think lobster mac and cheese), to unique and artistic cakes.

Couples are also attracted to minimalism in designing their reception space. Whether it’s a monochromatic flower motif, natural elements like copper, stone or grasses, or blocks of color, couples are finding ways to be both bold and simple. Fortunately, since the Minnesota Masonic Heritage Center has classic elements like marble floors and wood beams, couples can incorporate a wide variety of design elements. Whether couples prefer balloons or floral archways or draping or special lighting, our space is very welcoming. We also have the flexibility in catering rules to allow couples to bring in any licensed caterer they choose to have just the mix of edibles they desire.

The Knot Real Weddings Study 2018 found that “only 23 percent of weddings…took place in a religious institution.” One good thing about the Heritage Center is that if you’re like 77 percent of couples, we have spaces indoors and out that can be whatever you want them to be. At the same time, if you’re among the 23 percent who would prefer a church setting, we also have you covered. Our charming Order of the Eastern Star chapel is being rebuilt this fall and will be available for weddings in 2020.

Venues

The nice thing about wedding trends is that they reflect what’s happening, but are not a prescription of things to do. As each couple seeks to put their own stamp on their special day, there is no wrong or right.
